Sparkling Clear Industries has expanded its NOMAD product offerings with new GuardEx stainless steel air valves and center sections for ¼-, ½-, 1-, 1.5-, and 2-inch metallic AODD pumps.

These components can be used as replacement spares or to configure a fully stainless steel, ATEX-compliant NOMAD PWR-FLO™ pump, helping improve durability and performance in demanding industrial environments.

The GuardEx™ ADS design allows operators to repair or upgrade existing pumps more easily, reducing downtime and maintenance costs. With enhanced corrosion resistance and reliability, the stainless steel configuration is well suited for chemical processing, coatings, and other harsh service applications.

Recently, one of our customers on the Houston Ship Channel reached out with an urgent need for increased liquid filtration capacity. Their facility required a multi-round bag filter housing to support higher production rates.

The 12-round bag filter housing was loaded onto our truck Friday morning and delivered to their facility that same afternoon, helping them move forward without delay.

Delivering a Wastewater Solution That Saves Big

At Sparkling Clear Industries, we take pride in helping our customers solve real problems with practical, reliable solutions. One of our current projects is a great example of what that looks like in action.

A local manufacturer came to us with a costly challenge: their wastewater stream contained enough oil and grease that it had to be hauled offsite for treatment. That process was costing them nearly $40,000 every month.

Instead of continuing to pay for disposal, they wanted a long-term, on-site solution. Our team got to work.

Built Around Their Needs

We designed a customized wastewater treatment system capable of handling their 10 GPM wastewater stream. The goal: remove oil and grease efficiently and bring treatment in-house, reducing operating costs and eliminating the need for offsite disposal.

With the system design approved, fabrication is now underway. Below are the project drawings alongside the first stages of fabrication—showcasing how a concept becomes reality.

When it comes to protecting Texas’ coastal resources, few organizations have made as lasting an impact as the Coastal Conservation Association (CCA) . For over four decades, the CCA has brought together anglers, conservationists, and coastal businesses with one shared goal: ensuring healthy fisheries and marine habitats for generations to come.

This year marks the 43rd Annual Brazoria County CCA Banquet , a cornerstone event for our region that combines good food, great company, and a whole lot of heart for the Gulf Coast. Attendees can expect a night of raffles, auctions, and camaraderie - all while raising critical funds to support habitat restoration, reef-building projects, and marine science scholarships.

At Sparkling Clear Industries , we’re proud to support the mission of the CCA and its efforts to preserve what makes our coast so special. For many of our employees, especially those in our Clute office, CCA involvement is more than just a cause - it’s personal.

Our Vice President, Dan Johnson, has been active in the Brazoria County Chapter since 1988. A former Chapter President, he now serves on both the state and national boards of the CCA and continues to volunteer through shoreline restoration and offshore reefing initiatives. It’s not just about giving back, it’s about being part of something bigger than ourselves.

Sparkling Clear Industries Joins Phillips 66 & Sweeny Beautification Effort

At Sparkling Clear Industries, we believe strong communities grow where people take the time to give back. Our very own David Vincent recently did just that. On Thursday, April 24, 2025, David volunteered his time and energy at the Phillips 66 & Sweeny Beautification Community Planting & Cleanup event in Sweeny, Texas.

From 8 a.m. to noon, volunteers rolled up their sleeves to make a visible impact around town. The effort included:

Tree and shrub planting
Litter cleanup along Main Street
Beautification of the library grounds

One of the most heartwarming highlights of the day was seeing students from Sweeny Elementary join in the planting activities at Backyard Park, located just across from the library. The trees used in the project were generously provided by Trees for Houston , a nonprofit committed to urban reforestation and community green spaces.

David represented Sparkling Clear with the same dedication and hands-on attitude he brings to our customers—working alongside Phillips 66 employees, local residents, and students to help make Sweeny a greener, cleaner place.

When a bleach manufacturer faced potential downtime due to a corroded water softener system , Sparkling Clear Industries stepped in with a fast and effective solution. By providing a rental unit during installation and delivering a custom-built system designed for better durability and efficiency, we ensured zero production downtime and exceeded customer expectations.

The Challenge

A bleach manufacturer in Houston, TX faced a significant challenge when their aging steel water softener system began failing due to corrosion. The atmospheric conditions in the facility had eroded the steel tanks, causing leaks and reducing their production capacity. Because soft water is essential for bleach production, the manufacturer needed a solution that would restore full functionality without disrupting their operations.

Sparkling Clear Industries stepped in to provide a comprehensive solution. We supplied a new twin alternating 37 cu/ft water softener with fiberglass vessels and a fiberglass skid. This system was equipped with a PVC face pipe assembly, NXT controllers, and a HACH hardness monitor. The entire system was fully skid-mounted and pre-piped upon arrival to minimize field installation time.

To ensure uninterrupted production while the new system was being built and delivered, we provided a rental water softener. This kept their operations running around the clock without downtime.

Their thinking, as well as the thinking of the brewers in America, is that in beer brewing everything is important.

Adherence to standards, including the water, was so important that in 1516 Duke Wilhelm IV of Bavaria decreed that only hops, barley, water and later, yeast were allowed in every stein. This edict, known as the German beer purity law or Reinheitsgebot, has served Bavaria very well and for the last century the rest of Germany.

Experience in the art of brewing beer began to show that the natural water chemistry in a given locale produced a beer slightly or in some cases, very different from the beer in another area. While the water alone does not account for these differences, water chemistry does have an effect on the type and flavor of beer. When using natural waters a brewery may be limited to producing a narrow range of beers. But as you can tell by visiting the beer section of your local grocery store, some other breweries (usually a craft brewery) can produce a much broader selection.

In most cases this is done through the use of different waters for brewing beers with the goal of producing a specific taste. But how can a single location have so many different sources of water? In commercial applications where consistency of batches is important, this is most often accomplished through the use of some form and level of demineralization. Once the natural minerals are removed from the water, specific minerals can be added back to produce a water that mimics the natural water of any locale in the world.

In addition to the demineralization/mineral addition phase, there is a need to filter the incoming water to remove any suspended solids and activated carbon to remove the chlorine or chloramines. Once the fermentation process has concluded, the beer needs to be filtered to remove the sediment (usually the depleted yeast) and toward the end of the process, final polishing filtration to produce a sediment-free beer.

The result of these treatment processes is that a brewery in Longview, Texas or Milwaukee, Wisconsin can produce a beer traditionally brewed in Europe that is virtually indistinguishable from the European counterpart.

Sparkling Clear Industries Introduces New Product Lines

Sparkling Clear Industries, Inc. (SCI), with offices in Houston and Clute, has been awarded the distribution rights in Central/South Texas for the Fluid Engineering (FE) line of strainers as well as the TM Filtration line of Gas Coalescing Filters.

FE strainers, which are used in many liquid applications to filter out coarse particles (>50 micron), can be supplied in many different configurations from a simple inline cone strainer to a custom engineered automatic self-cleaning strainer fabricated from exotic metals such as Hastelloy C276 or 2507 Super Duplex Stainless Steel (Zeron 100). The Fluid Engineering automatic self-cleaning strainers have the most effective and efficient cleaning cycle of ANY strainer manufacturer in the industry. With the exception of some of their cast components, all of their strainers are manufactured to their customer’s specifications in the United States. This includes not only the strainers but the skids, control panels and any special requirements such as rubber lining or specialty coatings.

TM Filtration’s Gas Flow Membrane (GFM) technology gives natural gas producers an improved way to block unwanted carryover associated with wetter unconventional gas sources such as shale and biogas. In a traditional gas coalescing filter, extracted liquids and contaminants (collectively known as carryover) can be drawn back into the gas stream through a process known as re-entrainment. This is due to the fact that in traditional coalescing units, gas enters the inside of the filter element and flows to the outside. The result is that when the water drops out of the element it has to travel toward the discharge against the same gas stream that took it into the inside of the cartridge in the first place.

The TM Filtration GFM Technology addresses and effectively eliminates this issue by utilizing a reverse flow design through the pleated GFM filter element. Instead of trying to filter the gas on the inside of the filter cartridge, the TM design passes the gas from the outside of the element to the inside. This is, in fact, more efficient and is the way that most all other forms of cartridge filtration operate.

The process begins as the gas enters the vessel and is directed into a tangential circular flow pattern by radial impingement plates. The centrifugal force separates and removes large particles and slugs of liquid. In the second stage, gas flows upward through either a mechanical mesh or vane scrubber to remove medium-sized particles. The third and final stage of filtration occurs in the GFM filter element. Due to the pleated construction the element has up to 20 times the filtration area of traditional filter elements. The water stays on the outside of the element and only dry gas passes through on the way to the discharge from the filter.

The net result of this advanced design is cleaner gas streams at reduced operational cost.

Sparkling Clear Industries Celebrates 30 Year Anniversary

The employees of Sparkling Clear Industries (SCI) recently gathered to celebrate 30 continuous years of service under the ownership of David and Annette Johnson.

The Johnsons purchased the company in 1985, when it was a residential water softener exchange tank company. The company originally dates to the early 1960’s. Sparkling Clear Industries has evolved into a full service commercial and industrial filtration company, providing liquid and air filtration products, various filtration medias, ceramic catalyst support media, pumps, and much more. SCI is a turn-key service provider and works in many of the industrial plants along the coast.

Employees and customers tend to stay with SCI, and a number of them have been with the company since 1985. An example of this longevity is Robert Salinas, who was with the company before it was purchased in 1985. After 32 years, Robert has announced his retirement. Robert has filled many roles at SCI and has served as our purchasing manager for many years. Robert will be sorely missed, but we wish him well as he migrates to a new chapter in his life.

The evening provided an opportunity to share stories and reminisce about the past. It also provided an opportunity to discuss the future and to look forward to the new challenges and opportunities that lie ahead. SCI currently has two offices—located in Houston, TX and Clute, TX.

We are very proud to be members of the community that have served industries throughout Southeast Texas for 30 years.

Sparkling Clear Industries Delivers System to Chemical Plant

Among the recent projects at Sparkling Clear Industries, we delivered a Yardney Water Filtration System to a chemical plant located on the Gulf Coast of Texas. This system was installed on a cooling tower plant and consists of a 1,450 gallon per minute, multi-media system comprised of (3) 90 inch by 60 inch stainless steel filter vessels installed on a galvanized skid.

The new Yardney system replaced the obsolete, gravity-fed system, essentially doubling its flux rate. With the help of a crane, the new system was lifted over the cooling towers and installation began the day after its onsite arrival.

Since entering the industrial arena in 1985, Sparkling Clear Industries has focused and funneled its resources on providing industrial air filter products and liquid filter products for its customers. A recent Sparkling Clear project at a food processing plan provides an example of SCI’s capabilities, which includes designing and delivering industrial filter equipment.

What we’ve done in the industrial filter industry:

The food processing plant, located in Memphis, Tennessee, wasn’t able to use the water from a newly-drilled well for boiler and cooling tower make up due to the high level of iron in the well water. This resulted in higher than expected plant operating costs since they had to purchase city water for these uses.

SCI first became involved in a field trial at the plant of DMI-65, a revolutionary new filtration media manufactured by Quantum Filtration Medium in estern Australia. DMI-65 is a silica-sand-based filtration media that will remove iron, manganese and arsenic when operated in the presence of chlorine (sodium hypochlorite). The purpose of the trial was to determine the effectiveness of the iron removal properties of DMI-65 and to ascertain the appropriate hydraulic flow rate (in gallons per minute) for the required equipment.

SCI also represents Yardney Water Filtration Systems, who operate out of Riverside, California. Yardney has many years of experience under their belt in the design and fabrication of equipment that utilizes a wide variety of filtration media. SCI was called upon not only to conduct the field trial, but also to design and propose a system that would make the well water suitable for the cooling towers and boilers. The field trial was successfully concluded and the design shortly followed suit.

Filter Replacement, Houston

Last May, Sparkling Clear Industries completed a huge pipe and pump replacement and repair job on a chemical plant located along the Texas Gulf Coast. This plant was in their annual May turnaround, and one of the maintenance tasks was to replace sand and anthracite in the plant’s waste water media filters. Once the old media was removed, the technicians at Sparkling Clear discovered severe internal issues with the two 96 inch dia vessels, including:

To add to the severity of the replacement, after discovering some of the bigger problems and underlying elements, the Sparkling Clear Industries staff was informed that while they were at the plant on a Friday, the plant would have to be back up and fully operational the following Monday. This left them less than three days to complete a huge replacement and repair task.

The plant’s customer maintenance leader inquired with Sparkling Clear Industries about a temporary media filter so they could start the plant on time. Sparkling Clear Industries was able to offer same-day delivery on that order, and later that day delivered a trailer mounted duplex media system complete with two 96 inch by 72 inch side shell and back wash manifold media filters as well as temporary hoses. Sparkling Clear loaded the media into the temporary system on Saturday and got the equipment up and running on Sunday. In addition, the Sparkling Clear Industries staff also repaired the chemical plant’s existing media filters, removed the old media, replaced the strainers and gaskets, and leveled the new media into the vessels.

MENTOR, Ohio (February 3, 2014) –All-Flo Pump Company is launching a new line of air operated diaphragm pumps that will raise the bar on efficiency standards across the industry. The new line of innovative, stainless steel and aluminum pumps rolled out in December. For use in a wide variety of chemical and fluid transfer applications, the new air operated diaphragm pump line offers an extended set of improved features over legacy products.

Most notably, the newly designed All-Flo pump boasts a new, high-efficiency, air valve, built with fewer parts, making it the most air efficient pump in the industry.

“After initial testing, we can confidently say that our new line will be the industry’s most efficient air-operated diaphragm pump line available,” said Paul McGarry, All-Flo sales and marketing manager for North America. “For customers running our 2-inch pump, they could realize greater than 50 percent savings in annual operating costs.”

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics , the price of electricity hit a record high for the month of October, making October the eleventh straight month when the average price of electricity hit or matched the record level for that month.

“With Americans now paying 42 percent more for electricity than they did a decade ago, reducing operating costs for the customer was at the forefront of our minds when we designed our new line,” said McGarry. “Our team of experts spent a tremendous amount of time engineering this new pump to ensure it led to significant savings for our customers.”

Habitat for Humanity Walk

On Saturday, November 2, 2013 employees of the Sparkling Clear Industries office located in Clute, Texas participated in a walk to raise money for Habitat for Humanity of Southern Brazoria County.

Habitat for Humanity Community Walk

The SCI group participated in the walk to show our support for our town and also a way of giving back to our community. Habitat for Humanity builds for the less fortunate in communities throughout the United States and around the world. With Christian values at its foundation, Habitat for Humanity has helped hundreds of thousands of people live in homes. Their values have been nothing short of monumental.

The walk raised around $75,000 which is enough to build one home. Our combined efforts should help lift another family among the countless families that struggle to make it through each day.

We have been a long time supporter of our local Habitat for Humanity, this is the first year that we have all gotten together to walk in this event and hope to continue to do that each year. Moral integrity is what keeps us whole, and Habitat truly represents that idea through selfless acts for the greater good of humanity.

We also participate each year in Take a Kid Fishing that is put on by The Port of Freeport and sponsored by CCA Texas, it’s a one day event for children who may not have ever had the experience to come out and experience catching fish.

Water Softener recently installed by SCI

Sparkling Clear Industries (SCI) recently installed a water softener for a critical application in a Gulf Coast area chemical plant salt dome operation. This duplex alternating system supplies scale free and soft water to protect and lubricate brine pump seals.

A NEMA 4X enclosure contains the 3200NXT controller and respective stager. The controller will display Service, Standby or Regeneration steps. The softener will operate as a duplex alternating system with lockout to prevent the simultaneous regeneration of the two softeners.

A single Hall Effect flow sensor will monitor the effluent flow in a common header. The NEMA 4X enclosure will also contain a Signet Model 8550 flow transmitter with local display and 4-20 mA output.

Differential Pressure Monitoring is also included with programmable set points and 4-20 mA output.

The face piping for this system includes SS316 threaded ball valves with air actuated operators, schedule 80 SS316 pipe and SS316 3000# threaded fittings, conforming to the customers specifications.

A Polyethylene Bulk Brine Storage Tank with a 10,000 Gallon Capacity completes the system.

Emergency Safety Shower and Eye Wash

Earlier this year one of our closest suppliers, the All-Flo Pumps product line, published an article pertaining to some emergency work we had done on a Freeport location regarding safety showers and eye wash stations.

SCI Solves Two Emergency Shower/Eye Wash Problems

Sparkling Clear Industries (SCI), a leading industrial supplier on the Gulf Coast, recently completed two safety shower projects. In the first project, SCI was approached by a chemical plant to construct and fabricate a portable safety shower system to be used at their Freeport site. The safety shower/eye wash system is to be used in case of a safety incident in a remote area: where neither potable water, safety showers, nor eye wash stations are available. The safety shower systems must be portable, so SCI built the self-contained systems on a 14 foot long flat bed trailer. The trailer mounted system featured the following:

SCI constructed the safety shower systems in house and invited plant personnel to SCI’s facility to test the systems and familiarize them with the operation of the portable safety showers
systems.

For the second project, SCI provided another plant a system that addressed existing safety showers at their facility. The customer required SCI to provide a water booster pump system designed to accommodate enough water pressure and flow rate for (3) safety showers, all from a common water line. The problem was that the existing water line did not supply enough pressure for all (3) safety showers to run at once. SCI provided a skid mounted booster pump system that would flow a minimum of 40 Gallons per minute @ 50 psi. This skid Mounted system included the following:

SCI constructed the safety shower systems in house and the projects were delivered on time and in budget.

Water Softener Solution for Chemical Plant

Sparkling Clear Industries has provided air and liquid filtration products for over 40 years and prides itself in solving all customer problems.

Several years ago, Sparkling Clear Industries (SCI) saw a new opportunity in the Filtration Equipment Market. Dan Johnson, General Manager of SCI, began seeing more interest from customers in renting equipment for longer periods of time. Historically, customers were interested in rental equipment during a turnaround or for some type of emergency and the rental periods were generally short.

Joe Crocker, SCI-Clute Sales Manager, recently had a chemical plant requiring a temporary water softener during a turnaround in which their existing softener was to be repaired. As the project unfolded, existing system could not be repaired before the plant was restarted. SCI was asked to supply a 500 GPM continuous flow softener and have it operational within three (3) weeks. The deadline was met and, after three months, the customer determined they would require the system for a year. Another customer rented a multi-round bag filter system for a trial. The filter performed so well in their process, the customer decided to purchase the system. During this same time period, a third customer was feeding sodium bisulfite in front of their reverse osmosis system and was experiencing premature membrane failure. SCI installed a rental carbon filter and the customer discontinued using the chemical feed. One year later, the customer purchased the rental system.

“Stories like this prompted SCI to aggressively increase our Rental Filtration Equipment ,” states Ed Wasser, SCI President. “Most of the new equipment is larger and can handle much higher flow rates. Today, we have over 150 pieces of rental equipment in service in Southeast Texas.”

The rental program allows SCI to keep a plant running while their team works to refurbish an existing filter. It also allows customers alternatives to making capital expenditures. All SCI Technicians are Lock Out/Tag Out trained and CSE trained, as well as Basic Plus and Site Specific trained.

The rental program really plays to the SCI mantra of “We’ve got you covered”. When it comes to filtration and related products, the goal has been to be the “go to guys.” Many times, emergency filtration is a make or break issue for their customers.

Johnson feels the company’s “single source” approach separates SCI from the competition. “We can offer our customer Engineered Systems, Rental Systems, serviced by certified technicians. In addition we stock air and liquid replacement filters where we can cross reference 250 brands and over 500,000 part numbers and we have the largest inventory of filtration media in the area.”

Crocker says, “The confidence our customers have in us drives us to improve and recently it was one of our customers that suggested we stock ceramic ball support media. Our relationship with our customers becomes more of a partnership, built on trust. They tell us they need something and we get it for them at a fair price.”

In fact, Adsorbent’s reactivation facility in St. Gabriel, Louisiana is the only one of its kind on the Gulf Coast. Benefits of reactivated carbon filter media include:

Stewart Fulton, president at Adsorbent, LLC, explained that converting to recycled, reactivated carbon takes time to get the transformation through corporate, but the quality and savings aren’t something to be ignored.

“Basically you’re getting 90 percent performance, yet 50 percent of the savings compared to purchasing virgin carbon each time,” said Fulton.

However, virgin carbon is required in some applications, instead of reactivated carbon. We provide virgin carbon for liquid phase applications in super sacks, drums, carbon vessels or vapor boxes.
