Filter Media

SCI can supply activated carbons that are made of coal, lignite, coconut and wood. Different options for each are virgin, reactivated, pelletized, granular, powder, acid washed, caustic washed and impregnated with various components to achieve desired effects. Most products are available in various mesh sizes.

SCI offers a wide range of molecular sieve products, which are specialized to perform specific separation tasks that allow users to create a cleaner, higher-value end product that meets environmental and industrial requirements. Activated alumina is a versatile product that is available in a wide variety of grades and forms and used in many applications including bulk dehydration, purifying water, chloride adsorption, sulfur removal, sulfur recovery, and more.

Diatomaceous earth is a natural, ecofriendly filter aid and process enabler used with industrial filter presses and for the production of beer, fruit juices, sweeteners and edible oils. It is also an invaluable cost-effective refining and purification aid in sustainable biodiesel fuels, derived from waste-oils. 

Our DE-based low-cost water filtration units are being used to provide populations in developing countries with access to potable water and reduce the spread of disease, particularly during disaster relief campaigns. 

Our premium grade inert ceramic support media contains a higher alumina content than any other ceramic support balls on the market, allowing them to be used in applications with operating temperatures up to 2500 °F (1370 °C).

Tower packing and tower fill materials are used in cooling towers to provide a high surface area for steam condensation without restricting air flow. Tower packing is a mass of inert, solid shapes. Within a cylindrical column, it provides a greater surface area for the gas and liquid in a web scrubber to make contact.

SCI's Sand and Gravel water filtration media is a naturally clean filtration media found in Eau Claire, Wisconsin, the land of clear water. Our filter media Meets or Exceeds AWWA B100-01 Standard and ANSI/NSF Standard 61 and is useful for applications such as pool sand and filter sand.

The glacial deposit media has an increased surface area that provides better particulate holding capacity, thereby:

…Dual- and mixed/multimedia filters have a coarse-to-fine gradation of filter media. By using fine media with a high specific gravity and coarse media with a lower specific gravity, the layers of media approximately maintain their respective positions in the filter bed even after backwashing. Some mixing does occur. Mixing actually makes the filter more effective by providing more contact area for the suspended particles.

In operation, the coarse layer on top removes larger suspended particles. The finer particles pass through this layer and are removed by finer media below. As a result, most of the filter bed is used to remove suspended particles. This allows for longer filter runs and higher filtration rates because head loss does not build up as quickly as with rapid-sand filters. Multi-media filters are becoming popular, because they can greatly increase a water treatment plant’s capacity without loss in water quality…

Ion exchange resins are particularly well suited for the removal of ionic impurities for several reasons: the resins have high capacities for ions that are found in low concentrations, the resins are stable and readily regenerated, temperature effects are for the most part negligible, and the process is excellent for both large and small installations, for example, from home water softeners to huge utility installations.
